Minuteman Monthly Newsletter
Issue 86
September 2008

Welcome to this issue of the Minuteman Monthly Newsletter.  This is the monthly communication from my Web site at www.SaveTheGuns.com.  Thank you for reading this month's issue and for passing it on to a friend.

When I was just twenty one years old, (more than half my life ago), I became eligible to obtain a concealed carry permit in my home state of Massachusetts.  At the time, all I had to do was to fill out a form with my name and address and the reason that I wanted to obtain a concealed carry license.  I also had to be able to load and unload a handgun in a safe manner and do some live fire practice with a police officer observing at the indoor pistol range in the basement of the police station.

Now, there is an official basic firearm education safety course that is required for obtaining a concealed carry license in most states in the United States.  This course covers the basics of safe gun handling and marksmanship, ammunition knowledge and a basic knowledge of state law, but in my opinion, it is not nearly enough information to effectively and safely carry a concealed firearm in public.

Carrying a concealed firearm in a public place is a very personal choice and it's not for everyone.  The training and knowledge required by your State to obtain the permit should only be the beginning of your quest for information on concealed carry and not the end of your journey.  There is so much more to learn about concealed carry than what the average permit-holder knows.

I believe that it is very important for someone who chooses to carry a concealed handgun in public, to have a thorough and complete knowledge of the subject.

SaveTheGuns.com Gun Safety Tip of the Month

The most common cause of an accidental discharge is when an inexperienced person who is holding the gun places his/her finger on the trigger.  Placing a finger inside the trigger guard and resting it on the trigger comes naturally for the inexperienced person.

We've seen it thousands of times in the past.  Just look at just about any advertisement for a television drama or action movie and most of the time, the main character in the ad has a gun and their finger is on the trigger.  Everything from Elmer Fudd in the Bugs Bunny cartoons and the Three Stooges, all the way up to the movie poster for the latest action movie, the trigger-finger is shown inside the trigger guard and resting on the trigger.

For anyone concerned about gun safety like myself, it's very frustrating to see the constant portrayal of one of the three basic rules of safe gun handling constantly violated.  The first time a firearm is held by a young child, I could almost guarantee that the trigger finger will go directly to the trigger like a powerful magnet.

We must condition ourselves, our children and our grandchildren to place the finger alongside the firearm's trigger guard and NOT into it.  Three (3) to five (5) children each week have to be buried because this basic gun handling rule is ignored.

You can prevent a child from dying in September 2008, from an accidental firearm discharge simply by sending this newsletter or at least this one gun safety message to everyone you know.  If everyone who reads this message would do that, we can make sure that a child who is alive right now, will also be alive in October, it is really that simple.  EVERY child or inexperienced adult should be taught and conditioned to NEVER place a finger on the trigger until they're ready to fire.

Please contribute this month if you have not done so before.  More than 90,000 children have learned something about gun safety from my Web site.  Please contribute when you can so I can reach another 90,000 in the future.

$15.00 in contributions were received since the August 2008 issue of the Minuteman Monthly.  Thank you!  Fifteen dollars is better than nothing to help defend the Second Amendment with.

P.S. I just used the $15.00 in contributions for this month to give a Junior NRA Membership to a co-worker's ten year old boy.  If we do not start getting kids involved now, we will be able to watch the end of the Second Amendment in a few short decades.

Here is a link to the NRA's political action arm called the Institute for Legislative Action or NRA-ILA.  They have created a special page for District of Columbia v Heller updates.

From the following Web page, you can visit a link to hear the oral arguments in the case, read all of the Amicus Curiae Briefs, download the opinion of the court and much more.

Obama News

Here is a link to the NRA-ILA's Web page that is completely dedicated to Barack Obama and his firm stand against the Second Amendment.  Despite his current rhetoric that he supports the Second Amendment, Barack Obama has consistently opposed lawful and honest gun owners at every turn.

I encourage you to look at this page thoroughly and send it to any of your firearm-owning buddies who think Barack Obama would make a good president who would support and defend the rights of America's honest gun owners.

www.NRAILA.org/obama

U.S. Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) has made so many mistakes, gaffes, lies and has flip-flopped on so many important issues that he makes Bill Clinton look honest, John Kerry look consistent and Dan Quayle look like a spelling bee champion.

He is virtually insulated from harsh criticism from the mainstream media.  Make no mistake about it, a President Obama would be a friend to anti-gunners throughout the world and a domestic enemy of the Second Amendment.

I stop short of endorsing John McCain for President of the United States, but a President Barack Obama would be disastrous for law abiding American gun owners and would mean almost nothing in the minds of the violent career criminal.

After Barack Obama chose the anti-gun zealot Senator Joe Biden (D-DE), I chose to stand behind Senator John McCain (R-AZ) and Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) for President of the United States.  An Obama and Biden Administration would set back the Second Amendment dozens of years, while John McCain has changed his positions on a couple of firearm issues and poses an insignificant threat to the Second Amendment.  Vote your conscience on November 4th, but risking an Obama-Biden Administration with a Democrat-led Congress and we'll suffer as a result.

Minuteman Monthly Newsletter Aiming Point

Concealed carry of a firearm in a public place is lawful in 48 of the 50 states in the United States of America.  Only the states of Illinois and Wisconsin have refused to allow their own citizens to have personal protection in public.  Thirty six (36) of the States are "Shall-Issue" states where a citizen will be able to obtain a firearm with having to deal with the discretion of a local police body, as long as they are a lawful and honest citizen.

In most of these forty eight states where concealed carry is allowed, the only requirements to obtain the permit are a clean criminal record, no history of domestic violence and no alcohol or drug abuse, as well as a basic firearm education course.

In my opinion, anyone who carries a concealed firearm on a daily basis, with a concealed carry permit and only has a basic knowledge of safe gun handling is totally missing the boat.  Sure, I'll agree that a basic firearm safety course is a good thing if you wish to carry a concealed firearm in public, but it's not nearly enough.

Anyone serious about the subject of daily concealed carry in public should not be satisfied with possessing only basic safety and marksmanship skills.

There is so much more to know about concealed carry than basic gun safety and marksmanship and a cursory treatise of self defense law.  The subject goes significantly deeper, way deeper, deeper than most concealed carry permit holders are even aware of.

A much deeper and much more complete knowledge of this subject should be a goal foremost in the minds of those of us who choose to carry concealed firearms around with us.  Sure, there are many books available on the subject.  Some of these great books can be found right here:

Concealed Carry Books At Amazon.com

But this month's Minuteman Monthly Newsletter is not about promoting books about concealed carry.  This month's Aiming Point is about the United States Concealed Carry Association or rather the USCCA.

U.S. Concealed Carry - The Ultimate Resource for the Armed Citizen

click me

When visiting the USCCA, please use this text link and banner above.  I believe in the United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA) so much, that not only did I join, but I also became a USCCA Membership Recruiter as well.  If you decide to become a USCCA Member, there is a banner at the top of every page at www.SaveTheGuns.com that you could use as well.

There are many, many reasons why I believe in the USCCA.  First of all, it's The Ultimate Resource For The Armed Citizen, which is its moniker and it lives up to the hype.  The issues of Concealed Carry Magazine which come out eight (8) times a year are packed with true stories of self defense, articles written by professional self defense trainers, industry pros and more.  There are articles on weapon choice, caliber, holsters, carry positions, women who carry, when to shoot articles and much more.

The USCCA's Web site at www.USConcealedCarry.com, has many more benefits than just the magazine, though the magazine is good, the Web site is great.  The list of writers, contributors and experts who contribute to the USCCA is a listing of who's who in the self defense field.  Classic writers and industry professionals like Gabriel Suarez of the Suarez International firearms training institute at http://www.suarezinternational.com/, Massad Ayoob of the Lethal Force Institute has been a contributor, Tony Walker of SAS Training and author of How to Win a Gunfight is one of the USCCA writers as well.  George Harris of the Sig Sauer Academy also writes a regular column on training and tactics at http://www.sigsauer.com/EducationTraining/

There are member forums available at the Web site that you will have access to once you become a member, that are second to none.  There's a New Members forum, a General Discussion forum, a Ballistics and Ammunition forum, a Gun & Holsters forum, a Knives, Lights & Gear forum, a Training and Tactics forum, an Emergency Preparedness forum, a Marketplace forum to sell your stuff and the very popular Force on Force Notebook forum, where industry professionals can answer self defense related questions and more from USCCA members.

I have recently received a twenty eight page report from the USCCA called How to Transform Fear Into a Powerful Ally.  This report featured tips from a South Central L.A. Police Sergeant, a retail merchant who has survived four gunfights and killed five assailants, a professional bodyguard, a retired U.S. Marine Sergeant, an Israeli Military Intelligence Agent, a PHD in Psychology and more.  The article on how to transform fear into a powerful ally can be life-changing to some people who have not taken a close look at themselves.

Once you become a USCCA Member, you will learn more about:

  • The will to kill
  • Proper firearm selection for concealed carry, what's good and what's not
  • Proper holster selection
  • Levels of awareness
  • How good people are at a distinct disadvantage over the bad guys almost always
  • Proper tactics and training
  • Post shooting trauma and dealing with the aftermath of a deadly encounter
  • The legal issues of utilizing self defense and what you should do next
  • How your attitude alone can help you survive being shot
  • and much more!

I simply cannot say enough about the United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA).  The annual membership was recently $69.00 a year, but has been reduced to $47.00 or just ninety cents (90¢) per week.  I know that it might be difficult to come up with the forty seven bucks ($47), but once you become a member, you'll be happy that you chose to spend the money.  Membership in the United States Concealed Carry Association is an investment in yourself and your loved ones more than anything else.

So when your spouse tells you 'no' on spending the $47.00, you can say that 'I'm investing in myself and my family and I have a duty to learn as much as I can about this subject.'  :-)

Ninety cents (90¢) a week is well worth the price to be able to log into the forums and ask specific questions about concealed carry and self defense issues and get feedback from professionals and SERIOUS concealed carry permit holders from every corner of the nation.

I have posted a .pdf file from the USCCA on my Web site called the Armed Citizen Solution.  It can be found here:

http://www.savetheguns.com/PDF_Files/armedcitizensolution.pdf

I was going to attach the file to this newsletter as a convenience, but it would have made the file very large.  If you would like me to e-mail the Armed Citizen Solution to you privately, just let me know and I'll get it out to you, most of the time in less than a day.

This .pdf file is well worth a look if you would like to learn more about the United States Concealed Carry Association.  But remember, if you choose to join and invest the $47.00 in yourself, please use the following banner:

click me

I encourage you to learn more about the USCCA and once you become a member, I'll see you on the forums.  I'm excited about being a new member of the United States Concealed Carry Association and I hope you are too.  They are the 'NRA' of concealed carry in my opinion.

JOIN THE NRA AND FORWARD THIS ON TO YOUR NON-NRA FRIENDS AND FAMILY.
